To appreciate the true history of Sydney Australia, you must look deeper than the many attractions and learn more about how each of the areas of Sydney became what they are today.
While in the western suburbs of Sydney, convict settlements bred the working class; the eastern suburbs of Kings Cross and neighbouring Potts Point attracted the more affluent.
Evident in the grand old 19th century architecture, the history of Potts Point was established by power and wealth.
Originally housing aristocratic businessmen, government officials and the wealthy, Potts Point is still made up of a few grand old mansions. Some of these include the now privately owned Rockwall built in 1837.
Tusculum built in 1835 is now home to the Australian Institute of Architects and Elizabeth Bay House is now a museum.
Potts Point history shows that in the late 1800s through to the 1900s it became one of the more fashionable areas to live leading to the subdivision of many large blocks and the need for prestige high-rise apartment buildings.
Along with the wealthy, many artists, actors and musicians moved to the area during the early to mid 1900's making way for a new culture and subsequently the establishment of hostels.
